Corral Canyon Collection from Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren, master of home decor for mountain interiors has introduced yet another fabulous lodge-inspired fabric collection.  This one is called Corral Canyon and it is influenced by South Western colors and textures.

This is not your "South Western Style" of the 80's, however.  Lauren mixes the moody and muddy pastels in his fabric collection with modern shapes and finishes in his furniture line to make a look that is fresh and current for today.

As always the quality and scale of Ralph Lauren furnishings is evident.

Simple overscale pieces in rustic textures and lots of warm natural wood.

Furnishings and finishes are kept in warm neutral, natural colors.  Then subtle, muted pops of color come from Ralph Lauren fabrics, pillows, blankets and carpets.

These rooms are beautifully styled with large sculptural furnishings and simple over-scale natural accessories.  Lot's of air and white is left around individual pieces so nothing feels fussy or cluttered. Simple, rustic and oh, so luxe!

And here are some of the beautiful woven patterned fabrics that are part of this collection:

Canyon Vista Blanket

Saddle Peak Stripe
Wind River Ikat

And the beautifully colored solids that create the calm in this look:

The carpets are stunning, muted but with just enough color and pattern to anchor these subtle rooms:

And finally, the beautiful bedding:

They painted the wood white in their mountain home...they really did!

And I think it works beautifully.  Sometimes in design, the unexpected idea turns out to be an unmitigated success.

Do you like white painted wood in cabins and rustic mountain lodges? I would have answered that question with a big fat no. But after seeing this house, I've utterly changed my mind.

This beautiful Sun Valley home was designed by decorator Chipper Joseph for her own family's use. She set out to create a mountain house with the feel of a barn, and she has certainly accomplished it.

The red, white and blue combined with the Americana antiques and folk art are so charming and whimsical. It's all about fun, and isn't that just what a mountain cabin should be?

I love the light filled rooms the white wall paint creates. The walls just glow, don't they. The light bounces around the room and highlights the intense shots of color.

All this airy white combined with the bright primary colors should help keep spirits up on gloomy winter days! And won't it feel fresh and pretty in the summertime?

Here's one last up-close look at the living room furnishings. Red and white polka dots!! Blue toiles! Unmatched throws on every chair! Love it.

This house is featured at HouseBeautiful. Please visit the site and read all about it, if you are so inclined.

All the walls and trim in this house were painted with Benjamin Moore's Linen White cut with a 50% white base, just in case you want to try this look out on your home.

Barbara Barry Chalet Collection--Pretty Fabrics for Cabins and Rustic Mountain Lodges

I have always loved chalet style.  For years I loved traditional chalet style. The charming Swiss embroidered fabrics, the Brien Black Forest wood carvings, eidelweiss flowers, rustic Antique French and Italian furnishings.  My clients ordered so much Pierre Frey chalet fabric that I became the largest Pierre Frey account in the US.  In fact, I still love the chalet look.

Chalet Style --Old School
A room I designed for a client 15 years ago.  Lot's of Pierre Frey!

But these days, I am more enamored of a contemporary chalet style, one influenced by the clean lines of Axel Vervoordt's Belgian decorating.  Still dominated by simple rustic furnishings, old beams and wood floors, and still an emphasis on antiques, but dotted here and there with contemporary mountain pieces.  Less detail and fuss.  An altogether, lighter, cleaner look where emptier rooms are simply furnished with larger pieces, nubby fabrics in simple pale colors, everything chosen for its purpose.

A chalet room designed by Axel Vervoodt.

And now Barbara Barry, a distinctively American designer with her own fully developed contemporary design style, has embraced European chalet design and has created a line of fabrics, trims, pillows and curtain hardware.

Somehow Barbara Barry has managed to blend the old with the new.  You still see the traditional influences, the subtle snowflake and pine sprig patterns, the trims with their leiderhosen-inspired shapes.  But everything is in softer more modern colors and fabrics.  Traditional motifs and patterns are merely suggested, not rendered in perfect detail. Rumpled linens, faux furs and coarse woolens are the textures of choice. The color palette is restricted to soft grays, sages and taupe.  It's a look for today and I am loving it.

Rustic nubby linens in soft colorations dressed up with generous quantities of leiderhosen-motif inspired trims.

A beautiful woolen.

Embroidery inspired by the past but used in a new way.

A subtly beautiful pine bough pattern.

It's all about the trimmings.

You can order the pillows made to order--and there are so many styles to choose from.

And don't forget the faux fur.  It wouldn't be contemporary chalet style without it!

Beautiful fabrics and beautiful details.  By the way, the faux antlers are part of the hardware line.
Drapery tie-backs and rod supports in faux-antler.

Some up-close looks at some of my favorite items from the collection...

Bavarian Button--A simple linen with hand embroidery and wooden buttons.
